Director DJ’s Message:

Aloha mai kakou to the Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School learning community and we hope this message finds you all in good health and happiness as we move deeper into the month of April. A happy reminder that the character trait focus for April is ACHIEVEMENT which works perfectly as we head towards the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) state assessments later this month.

When we examine our School Mission Statement, one will notice a clear set of ideas for the programs we offer at our unique charter school. An expanding area of growth would be the arts, which would offer greater opportunities for our learners to experience exposure to fresh concepts. Earlier in the school year, we were treated to the talents of Mr. Cary and Ms. Ashiya through an Artists in the School grant that brought drumming and dance to our campus. This amazing program expanded the programs already in place on campus and empowered all the learners to explore these skills in new ways.

Last week, Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School enjoyed the talented people from Kid Pan Alley coming to the school with a focus on music. In one short week, the students composed, practiced, and then performed a song that they had created. We wish to express our gratitude to Mr. Paul and Ms. Melinda for sharing their talents, skills, and expertise with our students in Grade 3, Grade 4, and Grade 5. We certainly would have loved to include every single grade level in the school, but there simply was not enough time in the school day to accommodate this wish. Mahalo nui to all the parents and community members who attended the performance of the songs on Thursday in front of a live audience. There is clearly a vast amount of talent in our learning community and we look forward to our annual Talent Show to showcase these skills during the last week of school.

Best wishes to you all for a wonderful week ahead. Malama pono.
