Job Posting: Care Team Member (Educational Assistant)

Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School is a school of choice for learners on Kaua’i who thrive in a dynamic and fun learning environment. Emphasis is placed on building foundational literacy skills and understanding of mathematics as tools to be used in solving problems and addressing topics of interest to learners through Project-Based Learning (integrated curriculum). Equal emphasis is placed on developing “soft skills” that will serve our learners well in the 21stcentury. These include leadership, grit in meeting goals, collaboration, growth mindset, creativity, empathy, and caring.

We are looking for paraprofessionals who are interested in building relationships and making a difference in the lives of learners. Ideal candidates would be willing to work collaboratively with an amazing group of facilitators in the following ways: supporting learners in the classroom by providing academic assistance; listening to learners read; providing supervision and care during unstructured time (before school, during recesses, during lunch). Being able to leap tall buildings with a single bound would also be helpful!

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma
  • Clean background check and TB test

Desired qualifications:

  • Successful experience working with learners in grades kindergarten through grade 5.
  • Open mindset and ability to get along with adults and learners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to adapt to a unique learning environment and implement cultural elements and routines.
  • Flexibility
  • Completion of coursework in elementary education or early childhood learning.

What do super-hero Care Team members do?

There are a variety of positions that are part of our Care Team. Here is a sampling of duties which may vary by assignment:

  • Be sensitive to and engage learners in collaborative play activities.
  • Provide one to one support for learners with special needs.
  • Assist facilitators (teachers) in providing academic support and reinforcement.
  • Supervise and engage learners during meal times.
  • Assist facilitators in preparing instructional materials.
  • Attend training for any Care Team position.
  • Work collaboratively with other Care Team members to provide effective supervision.
  • Set-up, break down and maintain free play equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with learners, facilitators and other Care Team members.

Job Posting : Special Education Teacher K-6

We are looking for a skilled facilitator (teacher) who is interested in building relationships and making a difference in the lives of learners who are eligible for special education services and others who are experiences challenges. The ideal candidate would be willing to work collaboratively with an amazing group of facilitators in the following ways: co-teaching, pre-teaching, re-teaching, adapting, modifying, differentiating, and scaffolding tasks for learners with unique needs. Being able to leap tall buildings with a single bound would also be helpful!

Basic Requirements:

  • Hold or be eligible for Hawaii licensure for special education.
  • Living on or willingness to move to Kaua’i. (We are located on the south shore in the Koloa area.)
  • Hold an open mindset and be willing to do whatever it takes to meet the needs of learners with unique learning challenges in kindergarten through grade five.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Successful charter or traditional school experience.
  • Familiarity with Hawaii special education laws and procedures (or willingness to learn quickly).
  • Successful general education and/or special education experience.

What will this super-hero facilitator do?

  • Establish caring relationships with learners and their families.
  • Collaborate with general education facilitators and other providers in implementing services that allow learners to be successful and make academic as well as social/emotional growth.
  • Coordinate and implement special education services outlined in IEPs.
  • Attend special education training offered by DOE.
  • Build relationships with special education providers throughout Hawaii.
  • Maintain all special education records, adhering to guidelines for confidentiality.
  • Meet all deadlines for developing, reviewing or revising IEPs.
