Director DJ’s Message

Aloha mai kakou to the learning community of Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School and hope this end-of-September message finds you in good health and happiness as we approach Fall Break.

Mahalo nui kakou to everyone who came to campus last Thursday and Friday for our extremely important Individual Learning Plan Meetings. These meetings connect the learner, home, and school together in collective collaboration in the best interest of quality education. Current research clearly indicates that student engagement is a key indicator of that student’s learning to the best of their ability. This forms a key component of the Individual Learning Plan. In addition, the academic benchmarks measured near the end of the first quarter certainly assist the individualization of education programs as we move forward into the 2024-2025 school year. Individual Learning Plan Meetings are another example of what makes our school unique and a touch different from other public schools.

Another area that makes our school unique is embracing project based learning as a vehicle of teaching the state standards. A happy example of this approach was found in Middle School Math where the Grade Six students created board games based on solving math problems. Not only did the students create the board games but they next had an opportunity to play the games with their classmates. This project-based learning activity was creative, educational, challenging, and FUN!

Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School wishes to express our gratitude to the good people at the Rotary Club of Poipu Beach for their generous donation of free dictionaries to our Grade Three students again this year. They have made an annual visit to our school for several years now and kindly give this gift of knowledge for each student in Grade Three. We greatly appreciate their support of learning at our school.

The next school-wide assembly will be held on Friday, October 4th starting at 9 am in the gymnasium and all members of our learning community are warmly welcomed to attend. A helpful reminder that this is also the last day of school before the annual Fall Break.

Best wishes to you all for a wonderful week ahead. Malama pono.
