Director DJ’s Message:

Aloha mai kakou to the good people in the learning community of Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School, and I hope this message finds you all enjoying a restful, relaxing, and reinvigorating summer break away from the daily routines of school.

Although there are currently no students on campus during the summer, there is definitely lots of action happening. The hard-working American businessman Steve Jobs might have described this work through his wise words: “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” We are fortunate enough to have countless people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world who work at the school…….and they are.

Our incoming Grade Eight teachers, Ms. Kate and Ms. Brett have unconditionally volunteered their time and energy to change the old Art Room on the lower campus into the Grade Eight classroom. Despite it being only June, you can see from the photo that the room is already in the midst of transformation under their steady work supported by the talents of Dr. Jon and Mr. Adam. Meanwhile, the plans for the soon-to-be-constructed new building that will house both Art and ‘Ike Hawai’i starting next year are currently being processed by the County of Kaua’i, awaiting permit approval. The building will be located mid-campus, allowing easy access for our learners from both the main campus and the lower campus, as this building will serve all the students in our school. We wish to express our gratitude to former Vice Chairperson Rafael and our Dr. Jon for their work in creating the design for this important addition to our school.

We also wish to signal a change in the Monday Message that finds your way each week. As we head into 2024-2025 it might be important to continue to examine our Mission Statement to try and find ways to more closely align the statement to practice. We will be changing the Monday Message name to Wala’au Weekly to embrace perpetuating Hawai’ian cultural traditions, values, and language. There is no need on your end for any adjustments but we wanted to let you know in advance of this change of name.

Best wishes to you all for a wonderful week ahead. Malama pono.
