Director DJ’s Message:

Hau’oli Makahiki Hou (Happy New Year) to the good people in the learning community of Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School, and we hope this message finds you enjoying the fresh start to the new year of 2024. We look forward to welcoming back our learners on Monday, January 8th to commence the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year.

The character trait focus for January is RESPECT and it connects perfectly with some upcoming school events, including the School Choice Week and Jog-A-Thon. This will be our 5th annual Jog-A-Thon and it is our primary fundraiser for the school. As you might know, charter schools in Hawai’i are funded at half the level of the public schools. This means that we have to pay for unfunded costs such as our facility lease, bus transportation, and campus cleaning. The annual Jog-A-Thon helps us shrink the gaps in finances and allows Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School to continue to offer a high-quality FREE public education for the keiki of Kaua’i.

We appreciate the leadership of Mrs. Shay who is taking on the lead in several endeavors on campus including the Jog-A-Thon. She is examining approaches in the theme of continuous improvement and shares this message with us today: “Our 5th annual Jog-a-Thon is coming up in January and we are offering business owners a $500 sponsorship opportunity. In appreciation of your generosity, we will promote your business by printing the logo on the back of our 250 Jog-a-Thon shirts. If you own a business or know someone who does, please email Mrs. Shay at the school to donate.”

The start of the new year always brings some changes and our school is no different this January. We wish to express our deepest appreciation to Ms. Andra who has worked at our school for the last 1.5 years. Ms. Andra has resigned from her position effective today. We are fortunate to share that Ms. Jynatha who is extremely well known in our learning community for her excellent work as a substitute teacher will be taking over Ms. Andra’s class effective January 8th.

Best wishes to you all for a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2024. Malama pono.
