Director DJ’s Message:

Aloha mai kakou to the good people in the learning community of Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School and we hope this September message finds you all in good health and happiness. Mahalo for your unconditional support of our unique charter school.

We have a shining example of our incredibly generous learning community to share. Last Wednesday morning, just as the Morning Oli began, a parent showed up at the school and dropped off two microwaves as a donation to Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School. This wonderful act of kindness resulted from their learner sharing at home that one microwave needed repair and that one classroom was without a microwave. Unprompted and not seeking attention, the parent brought the microwaves, which both helped the school and shortened the lunch lineup to heat food. Wow!! Our school is fortunate to have parents like this supporting our school unconditionally. This is just one example of the countless acts of generosity from our learning community. Mahalo nui loa kakou.

On Monday, September 18th there will be no school for our students as we will be holding one of our Hawai’i State Teachers Association Union professional development days. The staff will be on campus that day to improve our school and work on the art of teaching. As Henry Ford once suggested “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young” and we are fortunate to have facilitators who role model the importance of lifelong learning for our keiki. The day will be dedicated to learning more about I-Ready, our new e-learning platform, in the morning, while the afternoon will be spent preparing for your visits to campus for the Individual Learning Plan Meetings on September 21st and September 22nd. As you can see from this week’s photos we have embraced lifelong learning on our campus even in the early pandemic days. This philosophy forms a cornerstone of school continuous improvement.

The fourth annual Alaka’i O Kaua’i Ninja Warrior Contest will return to campus on Thursday, September 21st and perhaps the greatest challenge might lie in my feeble brain to construct another creative course. Please be assured that our amazing learners have improved year by year in this fun event and we look forward to hosting again outdoors, rain or shine.

Best wishes to you all for a wonderful week and we look forward to seeing many of you on campus for Individual Learning Plan Meetings. Malama pono.
