Director DJ’s Message

A belated Hau’oli Makahiki Hou to all in the learning community of Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School, and we hope this message finds you enjoying your annual Winter Break.

Even though we miss our engaged learners on campus during the Winter Break, Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School is still in operations due to the work of our dedicated twelve month employees. Mahalo nui to Ms. Jennifer, Ms. Patricia, Kumu Nouveau, Mr. Geordan, Mr. Jon, and Mr. Adam for their tireless work in keeping the school functioning at a high level. Our school has daily business and maintenance work that needs to be performed to prepare for the return of staff on January 6th, followed by our learners on January 7th.

An area of great impact for our learning community is the campus improvements that Dr. Jon (we have affectionally bestowed a PhD in Fixology to him) and Mr. Adam have been working on. As you can see from the photos from this week, both gentlemen have been diligently working on the leaks found in the roof of our gym. Additionally, Dr. Jon and Mr. Adam rebuilt the stairs to the stage and installed new carpet on the stairs. We feel these improvements will have a positive impact on everyone at our school. Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School will continue to work with our landlords at Knudsen Trust on our lease, focusing on areas such as the gym roof and the maintenance of the gravel road that leads to campus.

In the days leading up to the Winter Break, our Grade Four learners took another Field Trip to the Alakoko Fish Pond. We are privileged to be part of this important revitalization which honors centuries of history on beautiful Kaua’i. It is wonderful to see our learners become deeply involved in respecting Hawai’ian cultural values and traditions as outlined in our school’s mission statement.

A helpful reminder that our school will be following the Hawai’i Department of Education 2024-2025 school year calendar with learners returning to campus on Tuesday, January 7th.

Best wishes to you all for a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2025. We are excited to see everyone back on campus this week. Malama pono.
