Aloha mai kakou to the learning community of Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School, and we hope that this message finds you all in good health and happiness as we head into the last week of February.
Mahalo nui kakou for your generosity in the “Change For Change” Maui relief campaign here on campus. You may recall that last August, the tragic wildfires swept through our neighbors on Maui, leaving us all wondering what we could do to help out. We started a simplistic program for our learning community called “Change For Change” to empower our engaged learners to find a way that they could make a difference for others. Although the program was voluntary and never run as a school-wide competition, “Change For Change” quickly grew into an opportunity for our creative students to help other people in need. Some of our students ran lemonade stands, some students did odd chores for extra money, some students emptied their piggy banks at home, and some students even went out seeking donations. We are immensely proud of everyone’s efforts and contributions, whether it was a penny or the bills that found their way into the collection.
Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School thought it important to follow up on this success story and share the outcome with our learning community. “Change For Change” raised just a touch short of $1000 due to the generosity of our learning community. Last week, the money raised was sent to the Hawai’i Community Foundation Maui Strong Foundation, where the funds will directly positively impact our neighbors on Maui with minimal administrative overhead.
We greatly appreciate the kindness, generosity, and support of this program from our learning community. We sincerely hope that our students have learned that even small, simple acts of kindness can quickly multiply into something much more significant and powerful.
Best wishes to you all for a happy end of February. Malama pono.
