School news and events for the week of 06.02.2025

Aloha mai kakou to the Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School learning community and hope this message finds you all in good health and happiness as you commence your summer break.
Mahalo nui kakou for your support of Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School which has been the fastest improving public school in the state of Hawai’i over the last three years. This week’s photo collage goes all the way back in time to my modest start at our unique charter school. Coming to campus each and every day over the last five years to be with our incredible learners has been pure joy. It is simply so much fun to be with our learners!
In my role over the last five years as Po’okumu there have been hundreds of thousands of decisions that were made and I know that some of them may not have met your approval. My apologies to anyone in our learning community who felt that their voice was not valued or respected. At the front of any decision sat the moral compass of serving our keiki first while staying in alignment with our school Mission Statement. All the years, we have all come together to successfully create a top quality free public education for the keiki of Kaua’i and my great gratitude to you all for turning a dream into a reality.
Beautiful Kaua’i will continue to be our primary residence while my wife and I split our time here and with ohana on the mainland. My mo’opuna is almost one year old and love my new role as Tutu Kane. My service will now shift to remote professional triathlon coaching as my background is fortunate to include being a former Canadian National Triathlon Champion (Age Group) along with 16 World Championship appearances including the Ironman World Championships in Kona.
Additionally, deep appreciation to our Board of Directors for granting me the opportunity to remain involved in an advisory capacity as an Ex Officio member of the Alaka‘i O Kaua‘i Charter School Board. It will be a great privilege to continue to serve our learning community albeit in a much different role.
I look forward to seeing you around island and sharing happy stories about the success of our keiki. My sincere hope is my life will continue to mirror “E hele me ka pu’olo ” (Make Every Person, Place, or Condition Better Than You Left It Always)
Best wishes to you all for a splendid Summer Break. Malama pono.
