Monday message 01.22.2024
Aloha mai kakou to the learning community of Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School, and we hope this message finds you in good health and happiness as we move deeper into January. We are excited to be celebrating School Choice Week on campus starting tomorrow and wish to express our appreciation to Mrs. Shay for her work in organizing this year’s events. Please check the ParentSquare messages for the Spirit Week activities that culminate with our annual Jog-A-Thon on Friday, January 26th, rain or shine at first recess.
School Choice Week is a perfect time to share one of the areas that make our unique charter school unique. In our School Mission Statement, one would find information stating that our school “teaches the whole child by combining academics, project-based learning, social-emotional learning, and the arts.” Social-emotional learning is taught in lessons on campus and displayed in the classrooms.
Our students and staff use Zones of Regulation to help communicate how each person is feeling at school each day. We all understand and respect that the world can cause various emotions and responses for individuals. By having the learners plus staff members clearly communicate how they are feeling by placing their name tags on the classroom Zones of Regulation Boards, we can determine the best course of support for each individual. This program is also a great tool for the school counseling staff, plus school administration, to do a daily check-in on each classroom and assist people when it is needed. You have even heard a learner from our school speak about being in a specific Zone of Regulation, so sharing this information helps build another important connection between the school and the home.
Best wishes to you all for a splendid School Spirit Week, and we hope to see you on campus for many of the festive events we will celebrate. Malama pono.
