Monday message 04.08.2019

Last Thursday morning, I met with a family in my office who left our school a few months ago, but decided that they wanted their son to return to our school for the 2019-2020 school year. In addition, they will be bringing a second child who will be starting kindergarten in the fall.

They said their son missed our friendly school environment, and I was not surprised to hear the parents say that about their son’s school experience. Having been a school director for well over 20 years, I can truly say Alaka`i O Kaua`i Charter School is one of the friendliest schools I have ever been a part of. Our school is pleasant for two reasons in particular. The first reason is that our learners come from loving home environments; the second reason is that our school location is very calming and safe, making learners feel comfortable.

Every morning when I arrive at school, I look forward to seeing your children, and say good morning to them. They all reply to me with a hardy “Good morning, Mr. B.” In many ways, we are fortunate not to have a cafeteria, like in most schools, a place where learners usually have to sit and wait for the school bell to ring, and then proceed to their classroom. We are fortunate to be located on a school campus with a large play area, and other common areas where our learners can sit and talk, in preparation for entering the classroom. I guess this is what our former and returning learner was missing about Alaka`i O Kaua`i Charter School.

Thank you for sending your children to our school, and thank you for the super spirit your children bring to our school, which is what makes it such a great school environment. Mahalo!

Thank you,
Frederick A. Birkett, Ed.M
