School news and events for the week of {date}

Alaka’i O Kaua’i will be hosting Learner-Led Conferences on March 28th and 29th. Thursday, March 28th will be a minimum day (Dismissal at 1:40 p.m.)  to provide our families ample opportunities to sign up for a slot most convenient for their family. Please be on the lookout for an email or notification from your child’s facilitator with more information about how to sign up.

What are Learner-Led Conferences?
This is a time for your child to showcase their growth and reflection of the school year thus far. Your learner must be present in order for this to take place, as our keiki will lead the conference, taking ownership of their learning experience and sharing samples of work that illustrate their academic progress and achievements. These conferences help ensure that learners are given the opportunity to reflect and grow while engaging their parents and facilitators. The experience creates a powerful incentive for learners to develop their skills, through the communication of high expectations, display and discussion of meaningful work, and opportunities to showcase talents in modalities that best suit their distinct learning style.

Learner Role: Learner leads their parents through classroom subject stations. They will discuss what they have been working on at each station. They will discuss their progress and their challenges. They will also share their Leadership Notebook and reflection on their ILP goals.

Parent Role: Parents walk through stations with learners, listening attentively. They may prompt and ask questions for more information, if needed. At the end, parents reflect with children on the process, discussing progress challenges. Parents and learners might discuss updating goals, if needed.

Facilitator Role: During this time, facilitators will be roaming the classroom to check in with families. They might provide some prompting if needed, but the learner is truly in charge of this conference. Facilitators can provide clarification, as needed.

Several families will be present at the same time. If you are interested in discussing your child’s progress privately, please make a separate appointment with the facilitator.Thank you and we look forward to hosting you in our classrooms!

Thank you,
