Karen Shay

2nd Grade Facilitator

Mrs. Shay has been working with children for over 20 years. She earned her B.A. in Liberal Studies and Multiple Subject Credential from San Diego State University in 2004. In 2020, she earned her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University Irvine. She has taught TK – 4th grade, in addition to being a reading specialist for 4 years. Her passion for teaching the whole child aligns wonderfully with Alaka’i O Kauai’s mission. She is finding her groove with Project Based Learning and has reinvigorated our school garden and launched a school-wide recycling program. Her goal for all keiki is to love learning and have fun!

She married her husband, Derek in 2009 on O’ahu and they have 2 sons, Koa and Alex (who both attend Alaka’i O Kaua’i). As a military family, they have been fortunate to have lived in 8 different cities in 3 states (California, Hawaii, and North Carolina). They have been lucky enough to call Hawaii their home for 5 years, specifically on Kaua’i since 2021. They enjoy outdoor activities including surfing, hiking, and playing with their dog, Anchor.
