Message from the Director

Aloha to the good people on the learning community of Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School and hope this bittersweet message finds you all in good health and happiness as we commence our summer break.

Bittersweet, you might ask? This message has a touch of sadness attached, as we will miss the joyful laughter and happy interactions we see daily on campus. It certainly seems pretty darned quiet up here in the valley during the months of June and July, plus our school cat, Sunny, will miss all the love and affection from our keiki.

The sweet part of the message is to share our appreciation for another wonderful school year at Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School. We had an incredible finish to the 2021-2022 school year marked with numerous celebrations that we were able to share in person with our learning community.

The second annual Na Kupu Lau celebration held last Friday marked a pinnacle of project-based learning under the guidance of our Grade Four learners that involved all the learners on campus. We celebrated together in the field on campus under near-perfect weather conditions, then enjoyed some light refreshments together.

The second annual Talent Show was definitely bigger, better, and broader than last year’s event. We enjoyed over 60 acts on stage over two days that included both individual, small group, and whole class projects. We certainly have some incredibly talented young people at our school.

The Grade Three class shared their project-based learning activity schoolwide, entitled “Bubble Bonanza”. What other school might you find a project where students were actually placed inside a bubble?!

Kindergarten “Blast Off” concluded the school year for our learners in Kindergarten and we were treated to an incredible electronic show of their work for the 2021-22 school year. Mahalo to Ms. Joeanne, Ms. Michele, and all the parents who pitched in to decorate the gym for this event.

Grade Six Graduation was celebrated collectively in the gym to conclude the 2021-22 school year. We greatly appreciate the wisdom shared from our guest speaker Rafael Tapia, Vice Chair of our Board of Directors, to make the celebration even more meaningful for all in attendance.

We greatly appreciate your support of the fastest-improving charter school in the state of Hawai’i and hope you enjoy a restful and relaxing summer break together. We look forward to welcoming our learners back on Monday, August 1st, to commence the 2022-23 school year.

Mahalo for your support of our unique charter school and malama pono.
