Monday message 04.15.2024

Aloha mai kakou to the learning community of Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School. We hope this message finds you in good health and happiness as we approach the midpoint of April. As we celebrate the character trait focus of ACHIEVEMENT in April, we wish to share a couple of examples of enhancing education on our campus.

Last week many of our learners were treated to Cap’n Mark from Storybook Theatre in Hanapepe who shared his marvelous skills in educating our students about sharks. To assist with the presentation, he actually brought a gigantic inflatable Tiger Shark to share with the students, and our learners were actually able to go inside to listen to some incredible tales about our island. This type of presentation touches the various learning styles of our learners and ignites their imagination to move deeper in ACHIEVEMENT in their education on campus.

The Grade Four students are about to embark on their study of the early Polynesian voyagers who learned to sail from the South Pacific islands to Hawai’i. Mahalo nui e Dr. Jon and Mr. Adam have constructed a scale model of the vessels that were used in these incredible acts of exploration. Kumu Chris officiated over a blessing of the boat prior to the adventure of virtual sailing that our students will take in the coming weeks. Our appreciation to Ms. Kate and Kumu Chris for their ACHIEVEMENT in creating such a fascinating project designed for deep learning.

Next week, we look forward to sharing an update on the great work of Grade One learners under the skillful leadership of Ms. Charton with their Bee Grant.

For advanced planning purposes, please mark Tuesday, May 14th as no day for students on campus as it is Hawai’i State Teachers Association Day. We thought it prudent to let you know as soon as possible in case childcare needs to be arranged in your household.

Mahalo for your contributions and support of our unique charter school. Malama pono.
