Alakai O Kauai campus and learners

Congratulations to all of the great people in the Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School learning community. Mahalo to your patience, adaptability, and leadership, our amazing charter school was able to return to on-campus face-to-face education after the Fall Break. This happy success story was made possible by the efforts of dedicated staff members, support provided by the parents, and adaptability of our learners to new procedures on campus.

Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School set new records in the last week in the short history of our school. We welcomed the largest number of keiki to campus in our three years, as over 160 learners are now enrolled at our school. We also set a new standard, as our bus is now COVID-seating-restricted full, with 46 learners taking this transportation option to campus daily. These new benchmarks are clear indicators of the positive growth at Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School.

The next challenge is that we all wish to keep our school open for our learners, so let’s work to keep our campus and island safe. Please do return the Letter of Acknowledgement, which outlines your commitment to follow the revised Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School Opening Plan and follow the procedures we have put in place to keep everyone healthy.

A friendly reminder to please return the electronic devices that were loaned out from the school to many members of our learning community. We need to have these devices on campus so our learners can use them to fortify their education, as we are currently using programs such as MobyMax to assist their comprehension of the state standards.

As we have returned to campus, it is exciting to share that project-based learning is starting up again. It’s fantastic to walk into the 2nd grade classroom and witness the excellent work the learners are doing on their castles. How about the curious 4th graders who are trying to figure out the best way to construct an outdoor classroom during a pandemic? These are just a couple project-based learning examples that Alaka’i O Kaua’i Charter School is proud to be offering our learners.

Mahalo to everyone who braves the challenging road to and from campus for driving with ALOHA! We understand that the drop-off and pick-up times can be hectic, and we appreciate the culture of patience, kindness, and cooperation that you demonstrate daily.

If we can keep the active COVID cases on Kaua’i ten and fewer and continue to stay open, it may be time to explore hosting our annual Trunk-or-Treat event on Friday, October 30. Just like our Ninja Warrior Competition, this Trunk-or-Treat can be a natural physically distanced event and potentially the first time we welcome parents on campus for the 2020-2021 school year. The Parent-Teacher Organization is working with the school to try to host this event, so more details to follow.

Mahalo for your support and best wishes to you for a healthy and happy week.
