Project-Based Learning at Its Finest!
Last Friday, January 17, 2020, our 4th grade learners were able to present what they learned about a Hawaiian Cultural practice. Leading up to the Presentation of Learning, their 4th grade facilitator, Ms. G., described their driving question and its outcome as follows:
What value did the Wa’a (double hull canoe) have in ancient Hawaii and what about its design made it functional? By completing the project, the learners will learn about navigating, the design of double hull canoes and why they were so valuable in ancient Hawaii. Learners will be involved in various activities to complete their project, which includes designing and engineering an authentic canoe that can hold a coconut. At the end of the project, learners will test their canoes in the pond and even hold a contest to see which canoe can hold the most weight.
All of our 4th grade learners were fully engaged in the process and developed a deep understanding of the concept. It was also good to see the number of parents who came to view their children’s presentations and actually see and hear them explain what they learned over the past six weeks. The ability of the 4th grade learners to explain what they learned is a true testament to the value of Project-Based Learning and what makes Alaka ‘i O Kaua ‘i Charter School special.
